So often we see substantial damage done in a home that could so easily have been avoided had the home owner known more about their homes plumbing. One of the things we like to prioritize when plumbing a home is having an accessible water main shut off or even multiple shut offs.
Many of our calls include walking the homeowner through the existing plumbing and in some cases labeling the water shut offs for the heater, water main and in some cases external irrigation. Many homeowners are surprised to learn most homes have fixture isolation valves, meaning if you have a leak at one particular sink, toilet or even the water heater in many cases you can shut these fixtures off and leave water supplied to the rest of the home.
Its important to know how to react if a leak is to occur in your home. There are many leak detection devices on the market that range from simple alarms to more advanced systems that will even electronically shut the water off to your home. A few hundred dollars spent now can save you thousands later.
